Week of:
Lesson 1 - BULLYING
In this first lesson we discussed "The MASON WAY" expectations in the Counseling Classroom. (Please click on the link above to see the Counseling Mason Way Expectations - RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, and READY in the Counseling Room). During this lesson, I read the book called "ONE" by Kathryn Otoshi. This is a beautiful color and counting book that turns into a lesson on BULLYING. Red is a hothead who likes to pick on the color Blue. The other colors, Yellow, Orange, Green, and Purple try and comfort Blue, but they do not stick up for Blue when Red is around. That is until ONE comes along and shows them how to stand up together and count. After reading the book we discussed ways to make a difference and what to do if you feel bullied at school. The students then wrote how they would make a difference on a #1 die-cut which was then glued onto a large poster board #1 and hung up in the hallway by the media center. Some examples were: I will be kind; I will say kind things; I will stick up for my friends; I will invite others to play. (Click on the book below to hear the story)

Lesson 2 - Problem Solving/Conflict Resolution
The students were taught 5 things that they can do or say if they are being teased. Through the book, "Simon's Hook" the students learned not to BITE the HOOK when they are being teased. They can 1) Agree with the HOOK 2) Do Little or Nothing 3) Distract them 4) Laugh or Joke with the HOOK and 5) Stay Away. Students can always get help from an adult too. The students also played a game to see if they could identify the strategy used to solve the conflict. |
Lesson 3 - Listening and Following Directions (Study Skills)
Students learned the importance of listening and following directions through the story, "The Worst Day of My Life" by Julia Cook. Here the character was having a bad day because he was not listening. An oral directions activity was also used to allow the students to practice "Listening and Following Direction" in class. |
Lesson 4 - Goal Setting (Study Skills)
Students were asked to name a "Goal" that they have. They were then put up on the board into two columns. Afterwards they were asked what the difference was between the two columns. One was "Short-term Goals" and the other was "Long-term Goals." Both kinds of goals were discussed along with how to set SMART Goals; S-Specific, M- Measurable, A- Attainable, R-Realistic, and T- Timely. Students then practiced writing a short or long term goal.

Lesson 5- Organization (Study Skills)
The lesson began by playing the "Back Pack Game." Two students were asked to come to the front of the room and find a certain item in the back pack- markers, folder, eraser, etc. (One of the back packs was organized where the other was not). The student who had the "Organized" back pack found the item right away where the student who had the "Unorganized" back pack did not. After several students played the game, they quickly caught on that the "Organized" back pack was the one to get to win. This lead to a discussion about being organized so they can find the items they need. The "Organizational Toolbox" was brought out next. Students picked an item out the of box and had to explain how this tool kept them organized. The lesson ended by reading the story, "I Can't Find My Whatchamacallit" by Julia Cook. Students had to watch for the characters using the tools from the Organizational Toolbox. |
Lesson 6 - BULLYING REVIEW
This lesson was a bullying/conflict review. We went back through the "Simon's Hook" book and the strategies that were used in the book to handle teasing. Some examples were presented to the class and the students had to decide which strategy was used. The students also created examples for the class to identify.

Lesson 7 - PERSONAL SAFETY
This week, your child was presented with the "child Lures - Think first & stay Safe" lesson. You should have received a YELLOW sheet in your child's Friday Folder explaining what your child learned. The following Primary Concepts were discussed: You have a built in computer to help you stay safe. It is your brain. Most people are safe, but sometimes they can become scary. It is against the law for anyone to touch you in the Bathing Suit Zone. It is important to listen to your inner siren. Your instincts are like a warning system. Sometimes people may use threats or weapons to scare you into to doing what they want. It is important that you tell a trusted adult right away. Lures were also discussed. These are tricks that someone may use to "Hook" children. Children who learn and understand the key concepts are more likely to recognize when a lure is being used and may be able to take actions to stay safe.
